A historic 1,000-yard rushing season, three touchdowns against a rival, and a professional baseball career helped define Charles “C.B.” Benson’s remarkable athletic legacy.

Former Benedict College standout Charles Benson is set to receive another major honor with his selection to the 2027 Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) Hall of Fame class.

Benson made his mark as a two-sport star for the Benedict Tigers, showcasing his talents in football and baseball during the early 1960s. His accomplishments established him as one of the standout athletes in Benedict’s athletic history.

C.B. Benson Made History on the Gridiron

From the single-wing halfback position, Benson was an explosive offensive weapon known for his speed, elusive footwork, and ability to turn routine carries into game-changing plays.

During his junior season, Benson rushed for 1,000 yards and 12 touchdowns, becoming the first running back in Benedict College history to reach 1,000 rushing yards in a single season.

One of his most memorable performances came in 1962 against rival Allen University. Benson broke loose for three rushing touchdowns, with each scoring run covering more than 50 yards.

That performance showcased the game-breaking ability that made him such a dangerous threat whenever he touched the football.

From Benedict Baseball Star to the Professional Ranks

Benson was equally impressive on the baseball diamond, starring at shortstop for the Benedict Tigers.

He reportedly batted over .400 in each season, demonstrating the consistency and offensive production that helped attract professional attention.

His performance earned him a contract with the Chicago Cubs organization, opening the door to a professional baseball career.

Benson advanced through the minor leagues, playing for two Triple-A teams. He began in the Cubs organization with Tacoma, Washington, before later playing for the Minnesota Twins’ Triple-A affiliate in Denver, Colorado.

His journey from HBCU athletics to professional baseball added another remarkable chapter to an already accomplished sports career.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating

Benson’s selection to the 2027 SIAC Hall of Fame recognizes a career that spanned two sports and featured historic achievements at Benedict College.

From becoming the school’s first 1,000-yard single-season rusher to earning an opportunity in professional baseball, Benson demonstrated the versatility and talent that made him a standout athlete.

His upcoming induction also shines a spotlight on the rich history of HBCU athletics and the exceptional athletes whose accomplishments helped build that legacy.

Congratulations to Charles “C.B.” Benson on his selection to the 2027 SIAC Hall of Fame class.
